County of Santa Clara Releases New Data on Long-Term Care Facilities Affected by COVID-19

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
April 14, 2020

Santa Clara County, CA – The County of Santa Clara's Public Health Department prioritizes responding to concerns about potential cases of COVID-19 in long-term care facilities (LTCFs), including licensed skilled nursing, assisted living, independent living, and board and care facilities in the county. Today, the Department released a new data dashboard detailing confirmed cases of COVID-19 associated with LTCFs.

"We are paying special attention to long-term care facilities because their clients are at higher risk for more severe disease from COVID-19," said Dr. Sara Cody, County of Santa Clara Health Officer. "We are acutely aware of this and have been actively investigating and responding to needs in LTCFs to protect our most vulnerable residents."

The Public Health Department has a specialized team that responds to cases and potential outbreaks in long-term care facilities and skilled nursing facilities.

When there are concerns about a possible outbreak or risk of transmission at a certain location, the Department initiates an investigation into the facility. Depending on the circumstances, the interventions may include additional symptom screening and more extensive testing, potentially including exposed individuals who are asymptomatic and possibly even extending to all staff and residents. When there is a positive case identified in a facility, the Public Health Department initiates thorough contact tracing by identifying all persons who may have come in contact with the case and then determining the duration, frequency, and proximity of that contact to identify possible exposure to staff and residents.

More information can be found in the County's detailed guidance to all skilled nursing facilities and other long-term care facilities on practices related to COVID-19 and conducting onsite consultation as needed.
