County of Santa Clara Launches Community-Based Drop-In Vaccination Clinics to Further Expand Efforts in Areas Hardest Hit by COVID-19

New Clinics Started Operating this Week at Sites in East San José and Gilroy

Santa Clara County, CA - In an ongoing effort to offer services in areas hardest hit by the pandemic, the County of Santa Clara began offering drop-in COVID-19 vaccinations this week for eligible residents through a mobile community-based clinic at sites in East San José and Gilroy.

Santa Clara County residents age 65 and up as well as health care workers who live or work in the county are eligible to receive the vaccinations, which will be available two days a week in East San José and one day a week in Gilroy.

“We are expanding our multi-faceted strategies to bring vaccinations into the communities that have been disproportionately impacted by COVID-19,” said Santa Clara County Supervisor Cindy Chavez. “These new clinics ensure vaccines are available close to home, on a walk-up basis. It simplifies the process for many.”

By eliminating the need for pre-registration at these sites, the County aims to reach residents who might not have access to a computer or the internet. The model is similar to the one Gardner Health operates out of Mexican Heritage Plaza, utilizing a system that issues time-stamped wristbands. Eligible residents register onsite in the morning and are given a time later in the day to return for inoculation.

“I am thankful to the Board of Supervisors and our Public Health Department partners for applying an equity lens to our vaccine distribution,” said San José Councilmember Magdalena Carrasco. “We must be purposeful in our approaches to combating the virus. Situating vaccine clinics in the areas most devastated by COVID-19 must be a top priority.”

The mobile clinics add to the vaccination toolkit employed by the County to make vaccinations available through a number of different avenues. While a large portion of the population is served by health care providers, others may seek care through community clinics, or prefer to use one of the four mass vaccination sites operated by the County. The mobile sites are an additional option that addresses barriers and provides a place-based vaccination option to help reach specific geographic areas.

“The new, community-based locations are part of our strategy to make vaccinations available in a variety of ways, break down barriers, and increase access for our most impacted communities,” said Rocio Luna, Deputy Director of the County of Santa Clara Public Health Department. “While many people are getting vaccinated through their health care providers, that’s not an option available to everyone. We need to continue employing numerous approaches to reach everyone, especially those most vulnerable to the impacts of COVID-19.”

This week, the mobile clinic began operations at the Gilroy Senior Center, 7371 Hanna St., Gilroy, and the Public Health Story Road Hub, 1775 Story Road, San Jose. Vaccinations will be available on Wednesdays in Gilroy, and Thursdays and Fridays in San José. Advance appointments are not available at these locations. For San Jose, eligible residents can sign up onsite beginning at 8:30 a.m. each day of operation and will be given a wristband to return for a vaccination appointment later in the day. For Gilroy, onsite registration begins at 8 a.m. on Wednesdays. Vaccination reservations are made on a first-come, first-served basis.

East San José and Gilroy have been hit hard throughout the pandemic, and the County has a deep commitment to equity and ensuring that the communities most disproportionately impacted by COVID-19 have access to information, resources, and vaccines. The County continues to explore locations for new vaccination sites that will expand capacity, as well as partnerships with community clinics to ensure that residents can access vaccines in community-based settings.
