Appointment-only vaccination site operated by the County will provide up to 1,000 vaccine doses per weekday
Mountain View, Calif. — Thanks to swift coordination between the County of Santa Clara and the City of Mountain View, a new mass vaccination site for the public is opening in Mountain View today. The County of Santa Clara Health System will operate the appointment-only vaccination site at the Mountain View Community Center, 201 S. Rengstorff Ave., with support from City staff.
“Convenience is key,” said County Supervisor Joe Simitian, whose district includes Mountain View. “The more locations we have that serve folks where they live and work, the more likely it is we’ll be able to slow the tide of the virus. We need more vaccine, and more options that are both local and convenient,” he continued. “My thanks to Mayor Kamei, Mountain View City staff and our County staff who are making this happen.”
“We are committed to bringing COVID-19 vaccines to the public as quickly and safely as possible,” said Mayor Ellen Kamei. “Mountain View was ready and willing to answer the call to action and provide the necessary leadership in standing up a vaccination site right away in partnership with the County of Santa Clara. Through this collaborative effort, we are making it more convenient for Mountain View residents and others who work and live nearby in North County to get vaccinated against this highly contagious virus.”
The community center site will offer vaccinations by appointment only, from 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m., Monday-Friday. The site will begin services gradually to prevent appointment delays and will ramp up quickly to provide up to 1,000 vaccinations per weekday. City and County staff, including public safety staff, will assist with traffic control and security at the facility.
“I commend our City staff for how quickly they mobilized to host a vaccination site at our community center,” noted City Manager Kimbra McCarthy. “Operationally, this is a tremendous achievement to convert this City-owned facility within days to a mass vaccination hub that is ready to vaccinate up to 5,000 individuals per week. Having a vaccination site right here in Mountain View will benefit our community greatly.”
“We are grateful to the City of Mountain View for allowing the County of Santa Clara Health System to use its community center to expand our vaccination capacity and geographic reach into our community,” said Dr. Jeff Smith, County Executive for the County of Santa Clara. “Our Mountain View site will add much-needed capacity and builds upon our existing capacity at several sites in San Jose and Gilroy.”
Due to limited vaccine supply, the County and other healthcare providers in the region are currently offering vaccinations to healthcare personnel and long-term care facility residents, as well as people who are age 75 and older. As more vaccine supply becomes available, healthcare providers will expand access to additional groups.
The Mountain View location is now accepting appointments. To schedule a COVID-19 vaccine appointment at this or other locations in Santa Clara County, visit sccfreevax.org.
Public health officials strongly advise everyone to continue to take steps to limit the spread of the virus and reduce strain on our health care systems. These actions include: staying home as much as possible, wearing a mask when leaving home, limiting interactions with those outside your immediate household, keeping a physical distance of at least six feet apart, washing hands frequently, and getting the COVID-19 vaccine when you are eligible.
